Storm #1 or "Why mmmagpie bitches about people fucking with the colors in comic panels"

Images on the left are original screenshots from the digital version of the comic. They’ve been cropped, and that’s it.  The images on the right belong to three users - links to the original posts are in the captions.

Now…do you see what’s wrong with this picture? This is why I bitch about edits, and how they misrepresent the comics. Storm has pretty dark skin. If you hadn’t read the comics, and only seen the edits, you might be a bit taken aback by that fact. That’s a problem. In polite company, it’s generally agreed that lightening the skin of a person of color is a no-no. And, unfortunately, that’s what’s going on here.

I’m not claiming that these edits were made to lighten Storm’s skin. But they do lighten her skin. And that is something to take into consideration before posting an edit. Representation of women and minorities in comics is a huge issue, and it’s fucking amazing that Storm finally has her own solo title. It’s not amazing that her skin is being lightened because people seem to feel a need to add a #mine tag underneath somebody else’s artwork.

Ugh, sorry, I know that whining won’t make a difference, but the most popular set I’ve seen still has Storm’s skin significantly lighter than it appears in the comics. She’s also inexplicably orange.

These are part of set by clintbarttons (sorry, it won’t let me tag!). Once again, I don’t think that anybody is actually thinking “Wow, Storm’s skin is way too dark. I’ve gotta fix that!” but I do think that people should be aware that this is still a problem, even if they’re doing it unintentionally.

I wouldn’t have added more to my original rant if I hand’t had several people tell me that they weren’t aware that Storm was particularly dark skinned. And I find that a bit alarming. All that the people I’ve spoken to have seen are edits on Tumblr where Storm’s skinned has been lightened. Because the sets that get popular are the ones where Storm’s skin has been fucked with. And THEN people who aren’t reading any books in which Storm appears aren’t even aware of her skin color. Which is pretty fucked up. White washing is never good.

TL;DR Highlights: Tumblr is so fucked up that some people have never seen unedited (and therefore unlightened) panels of Storm. The implications of this are not good.

Or maybe they aren’t aware Storm has “particularly dark skin,” because it changes literally every time a new colorist touches her. I own official comics where Storm is every bit as light-skinned as in those edits. There’s also the fact that Halle Berry is the face of Storm for many people, and she is mixed-race and firmly on the “high yellow” end of the spectrum.

Not saying white-washing isn’t a thing that happens or that the brightness/contrast in some of those edits isn’t pushing it. But I kinda doubt tumblr is anyone’s sole source of knowledge about the character. The fact is simply that comics!Storm has gotten consistently darker over the past decade or so in direct response to the minority representation issue. From the 70’s straight on through the 90’s? This is what she looked like more often than not:

Okay, so apparently there are people who get the entirety of their knowledge about Storm from tumblr. Guess I should have read through the comments before commenting. (Though the fact that anyone would use tumblr as the definitive source for anything kinda scares me.)

I just wanted to clarify that I wasn’t disagreeing that what was done to the artwork of Storm #1 is bad. (Though I was fiddling around in photoshop and I don’t think it was intentional. I think they upped the brightness and contrast to make storm stand out from the background a bit more, and it had the unintended side-effect of lightening her skin.) What I was trying to say is that you can’t really point to any one comic and say, “This! This is Storm’s canon skin-color and no deviations shall be accepted.” Because it has been wildly inconsistent throughout the years. But it’s totally okay to say “This is how this particular artist portrayed Storm and it makes me uncomfortable that that is being tampered with.” Or even “I prefer how artist x portrays Storm.”

Just as a juxtaposition to some of the light-skinned storms in my first post. This came out around the same time as the panel with Doom:

This hails fro the Jim Lee era that classic 90’s cartoon costume was from.

And if you really want your head to explode from inconsistency, have these three pieces that were probably only 5 years a part. All drawn by Chris Bachalo, but obviously colored by different people:

Personally, I haven’t picked up an X-comic since around 2003. The loss of our local comic shop combined with the dreaded movie bleed-in (I really hate the movies) forced me to drop them. So it kinda baffles me when people say they thought her skin was lighter because of tumblr, when tumblr and CBR are pretty much the main reason I’ve noticed her skin-tone gradually darkening. I don’t think it ever remains truly consistent across an era, but there are definitely trends and averages. Back in the 80’s, she was most likely to have a Beyonce-like skintone. In the 90’s, where I think the shift started, it was truly all over the place. From the early 2000’s on, darker skin tones seemed to take over as the norm.

It’s after 5 AM, and I have long since lost my point. But I think it was, “There are plenty of reasons for people to have different ideas of what Storm’s skin looks like aside from tumblr photosets. For those of us who actually leave tumblr from time to time.”

  • White MRAs:I'm tired stories where men are conscripted into knighthood and horsemanship to endanger their own lives in fights against dragons on behalf of entitled princesses. Are MEN and boys not also worthy of protection against dragons?

Ancient Egyptians Used Meteorites For Jewelry

Open University (OU) and University of Manchester researchers wrote in the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science that they found proof that ancient Egyptians used meteorites to make accessories.

In 1911, archaeologists dug up strings of iron beads at the Gerzeh cemetery, about 43 miles south of Cairo. The Gerzeh bead is the earliest discovered use of iron by the Egyptians, dating back from 3350 to 3600 BC. The bead was originally thought to be from a meteorite based on its composition of nickel-rich iron, but scientists challenged this theory back in the 1980s. However, the latest research places this theory back on top.

The scientists used a combination of electron microscope and X-ray CT scanner analyses to demonstrate that the nickel-rich chemical composition of the bead confirms its meteorite origins.

Philip Withers, a professor of materials science at University of Manchester, said meteorites have a unique microstructural and chemical fingerprint because they cooled incredibly slowly as they traveled through space. He said it was interesting to find that fingerprint in the Gerzeh bead.

“This research highlights the application of modern technology to ancient materials not only to understand meteorites better but also to help us understand what ancient cultures considered these materials to be and the importance they placed upon them,” said Open University Project Officer Diane Johnson, who led the study.

youredarrenfreakingpotter:

My dad would tell me that when we were little and people would say to him “wow, four daughters, that’s a lot of weddings to pay for” (because traditionally the bride’s family would pay for the wedding), my dad would respond with “well, we’re hoping at least one of them will be gay so we can split the cost with the other bride’s family”
He said people never knew how to respond

Well, at least now I know there is a state more backward than Ohio. Never had anybody comment on my future wedding. When we see a family with a ton of kids here, the comment is generally, “That’s a lot of college to pay for.” Regardless of gender.

So I’m in line for the photo op and I’d been carrying a Cap plushie around as part of a Coulson cosplay, but I was actually trying to put Cap before my photo but Anthony Mackie saw it and he was like “DON’T YOU DARE. GIVE CAP TO THE FALCON, C’MON, GIVE IT TO THE FALCON.”
So Sebastian Stan was like “yeah, give ‘im to the falcon.” and rolled his eyes at me, and winked
And what are you going to do in that situation but listen to the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so I handed it over and officially could not contain my laughter as Anthony Mackie took it, studied it for a minute before saying, “I know just where Cap belongs.”
So he shoved him up his shirt and Sebastian Stan like. pulled me closer and leaned in to whisper, “he’s crazy. I’m so sorry.”
And then he made that face at Anthony Mackie for the photo and I look like a giant doof because I couldn’t, for the life of me, stop laughing. But I thought I’d share anyway.
